Turning northward for the final leg with that strong south wind was such a relief, and then turned into a long downhill run toward the Canadian valley. I exceeded 48 mph by just coasting, and one rider reported 50 mph peak speed. As I flew downhill I felt the entirety of my fatigue blow away, replaced with the joy that comes from such a ride. The road leveled off and at Main Street we had a right turn, and a tenth of a mile climb to River Mission, our home for the night.
The Independence Day celebration is under way. Families are out enjoying this balmy day, and it just so happened as I approached our destination there was a horse drawn carriage sauntering down the bunting lined street hauling children. It was a postcard perfect finish to the day’s travels.
Tonight there is a watermelon feast, duck race, rodeo, dances, Charlie Daniels is playing, and Denny McLanahan is rumored to be coming home. Oh yeah, and fireworks. I'm all excited about the duck race for it just so happens I have my own duck. I found it in Oklahoma City in the wreckage, and it’s been riding on my rear rack since. This no-name from out of town is going to walk away with the coveted cup!
Tomorrow is another long day, as is the day after. We cross the panhandle of Oklahoma an into Liberal, Kansas on a northward route with 21 mph winds from the south. This will be good.
Canadian, Texas duck race. I should have known.
First, everything is bigger in Texas, and these are
"Canadian" ducks!
I'm getting a bit sore down there, so was shopping for a new saddle.
Love your posts Mark!
